Taped Foam Neck vs.

Do I need extra neck padding on my dog's harness? If so, should I get taped foam or neoprene? What's the difference? First, if you plan on competing in weight pull competitions, conditioning your dog by dragging heavier weights, or working your dog on a regular basis, yes, I do recommend some type of additional neck padding. As for which one, it really boils down to personal preference Both do a wonderful job of giving your dog some extra comfort.. Taped foam is tubular foam rubber that is wrapped around the neck and taped up. Many folks like it and swear by it, and it is rather common at see on most harnesses.

NeOPRENE

Neoprene, on the other hand, is 1/4" flat rubber that is sewn between the fleece and webbing on the neck of the harness. I use this padding on my personal dogs' harnesses. Why? Because it seems to work well for them. As I said before, it really is a matter of personal preference which you use for your dog. Just like people, every dog is different and what works for one dog, may not work for another..

D-RING AT THE NECK
ADDITIONAL FLEECE
PADDED SPREADER BAR

How long should a weight pull harness be?

There are ALOT of OPINIONS about this question, with the key word being: OPINIONS. The answer should be based on your dog's needs. Are you going to be competing or will this be for conditioning? Does your dog spin and tangle? Or does your dog prefer some leg room? Again, it all boils down to what works for you and your dog. Of course you must keep in mind that if you are competing, many organizations have a maximum length your harness may be. I make my harnesses with an average length so that it easily meets the requirements of all weight pull organizations. Plus it is a design that has worked for me over 20+ years of competing. It is also ok if the spreader bar hits the dog's hocks, because when your dog puts its head down to work, the spreader will rise. Now, if you would like to have an extended length, especially for those that are doing CRT only, please just let me know. I'll add in extra length at no additional cost.

Getting started....

Here's a link to an article I wrote about getting started into weight pulling. It is probably one of the easiest dog sports to get involved with. The key is to go slow, and keep it fun for you and the dog.
